Reciprocity
Building meaningful relationships through mutual respect, cultural exchange, and shared learning.

Mutual Exchange
I choose the word reciprocity instead of community engagement intentionally - not as a strategy to achieve pre-defined outcomes, but as a practice of exchange for mutual benefit. From mediating marine spatial planning in the Caribbean to collaborating with Kichwa fishing captains in the Galápagos, my work is built on acknowledging and valuing diverse worldviews and knowledge systems.

Language & Cultural Connection
As a multilingual scientist, I understand that language is a window into cross-cultural understanding. I dedicate significant time to learning both commonly spoken and indigenous languages of the places where I work, including Spanish, French, Hawaiian, Kichwa, and Tahitian. This commitment goes beyond practical necessity—it's an expression of respect for cultural heritage and long-term commitment to place.

Education & Empowerment
I work to create accessible pathways into science while integrating traditional knowledge systems and place-based learning. Through initiatives such as a biocultural restoration fellowship in Hawai'i and co-founding a cultural exchange program between foreign researchers and Tahitian culture and language students, I aim to make marine science education accessible and culturally meaningful for the next generation of ocean stewards.
